2007 Jacques A. Rautio Memorial Tournament

Something overcomes us when we have a great tee shot or sink a putt. We seem to have more passion we are relaxed and have fun. Several people experienced this joy Sunday July 29th when they golfed in the Jacques A. Rautio Memorial Golf Tournament this year. Consistently recognized was one of the top events in the area this fundraiser celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. Dan Green and his grounds crew exceeded all expectations as they prepared the Greenview Country Club in West Monroe New York for the tournament.

The Central Square Community Church coordinates this tournament each year. As a result they donate scholarships to the Fort Brewerton Greater Oneida Lake Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund. Probably the most famous shot of the day came from a payloader. A single ball of over 600 rolled onto the green and in the cup. The Central Square Community Church teamed up with Dumac Business Systems of East Syracuse to support local native Ryan McCarthys efforts on the Peace Corps. Ryan is in Benin Africa. While there he is building an youth center for children. (See related story)

This years winning team was from Dumac Business Systems from East Syracuse NY. Howard McCarthy Stephen Williams and Bill Swedberg teamed up for a 60. That was 11 under par. Bill Swedberg came 880 miles from Clemson South Carolina to play in this years tournament on the Dumac Team. The Second Place team turned in a 63. Golfers Carl Kristeller Doug Hirsch Chris Luce and Ryan Hulbert were tremendous. The third place foursome shot 64. Chip & Ernie Ladd Ron Naum and John Francisco representing Watson Funeral Home from Central square.

In addition to the 18-hole captain and crew tournament the 3rd Annual Jacques Rautio - Amanda Fisher Pre Tournament competition was also held. The winner of the Chipping Tournament was Steve Edmunds. Steve Chipped to 15 inches from the flag. The putting contest had 5 winners in a field of contestants. Carl Kristeller Ron Phillips Don Jones John Nappa and Shawn Lehan took the honors. Closest to the pin contests saw Clyde Phillips fall 6 inches near the pin and Dawn McDaniels came in at 16 feet 11 inches. A second closest to the pin competition saw Bill Swedberg landed 4 feet 6 inches from the cup. On the fairways Sunday the 18th fairway the longest drive competition saw defending champion Stephen Thompson return this year and drive the ball over 325 yards for the longest drive of the day.
